As the blog title suggests, my blog entries will be about topics from my mind to the keyboard.  Opinions, questions, and “aha’s” that I come across day to day that I want to share.

Here’s what’s top of mind today  -  Email.

Do you use it as your basis for communication at work?  How much email do you get in a day? If you are like most of us, you’re getting about 50 emails a day. How many of those emails are directed solely to you? Are you usually just copied?

Today I spent about 2 hours sorting through emails. Most of them I was able to delete. Others, I kept in my inbox to deal with at a later time. However, the folks that know me well know enough to send me notes through our corporate social networking tool at work (Lotus Connections). People will post a note on my “wall”.  Why not? this is the best way to reach me outside of work as well. Facebook messages reach me immediately, and I rely on them to stay close to friends and family. Email is just a big time sync, and a major frustration.

I just heard that some large companies will be doing away with email for their employees. They are going to rely solely on communication channels through their corporate social networking tools. To me, this is a major breakthrough in the way we will communicate at the workplace. I’ll be watching to see how that works for these brave companies.
